No more office says Airbnb CEO
The holiday hosting company Airbnb has announced that there will be no more office, or more specifically “The office as we know it, is over,” CEO Brian Chesky told Time.
What changes are being made?
Heading into the office isn’t the only thing that Chesky wants to change. Around six thousand employees will not only be able to work from home, but they will also be able to work from over 170 countries, up to three months of the year, without taking a pay cut. This is something that other large global companies are struggling to keep up with.
Brian Chesky has received a huge amount of praise for his new work initiative, with critics calling it “the best work plan” yet.
Why have these changes been made?
Reasoning behind this includes being able to widen the talent pool and no longer disregard those not living within a commutable distance of the head office in San Francisco. As Chesky mentions:
If we limited our talent pool to a commuting radius around our offices, we would be at a significant disadvantage. The best people live everywhere, not concentrated in one area.”
What about those who like to work in an office environment?
However, the office isn’t being scrapped completely. Instead, it will be used as a collaborative space for employees to meet up, possibly for a week or two every quarter. This will benefit those who struggle with the ‘side-effects’ of home and remote working and support the importance of quality work time.
Although this new plan has got a lot of attention, Chesky is worried about issues like loneliness and isolation affecting his employees, which is why the office space will still be available.
This is an immensely popular topic at the moment, and Airbnb have received more than 800,000 views since the news got out.
