Hootsuite lays off 30% of staff due to ‘refocus’

Hootsuite, the social media management platform has made the decision to lay off a rumoured amount of 400 members of staff – released in yesterday’s internal announcement. This means that they are left with approximately 1000 employees.

This unexpected news comes swiftly after the makeover of Hootsuite’s new mascot ‘Owly’ and overall rebranding including the logo.

We have seen many other tech companies lose their footing in recent months, including the likes of Shopify who have laid off 10% of their staff and Clearco who have cut 25% of staff too. It seems that the 2021 recruitment rush is beginning to catch up with the businesses as growth is slowing down and stabilising due to economic pressure in the Tech industry.

Hootsuite CEO Tom Keiser has stated:

We need to refocus our strategies to drive efficiency, growth and financial sustainability”

They were supposedly working hard to avoid layoffs in 2022 and did announce their opening of a new Atlanta-based office with plans to hire over 60 positions before the end of the year.

Hootsuite are keeping their cards close to their chest and have not released specific information regarding the roles that have been laid off, or if specific departments have been affected in large quantities, however they have said, “These people are our colleagues and our friends. They are some of the best in their fields and we will do whatever we can to help them land elsewhere”.
