Here are the top Femtech companies we’re keeping an eye on

In an industry where medical research is largely based around men, femtech is a type of technology which sets out to focus more specifically on the health of women.

Femtech, or female-focused technology is comprised of software, diagnostics, products and services that specifically cater to women’s health including, but not limited to, fertility tracking, menstruation, pregnancy and nursing care, sexual wellness and reproductive system health care.

Companies within this industry focus on manufacturing and selling related products such as informative apps and platforms, feminine hygiene products and even wearable devices.

With a goal of progressively making this industry more visible to women, here are five convention-challenging companies that are working to improve women’s health.

Elvie

Taking the female health industry by storm, Elvie has become somewhat of a revolutionary, being responsible for proudly placing giant inflatable boobs in and around London in an awareness campaign for their innovative tech that aims to improve the lives of women worldwide. Their popular medical technology includes an award-winning pelvic floor trainer and a silent, wearable breast pump.

Clue

Also making waves is one of the original startups, Clue. Three years after creating the admired menstrual cycle tracking app, founder Ida Tin coined the term femtech in 2016. Clue provides pivotal information in over 30 health categories that include mood, menstruation, digestion and even hair and skin, the data of which are used to predict both ovulation and menstruation. Using its unprecedented data set from its 8 million anonymous users in partnership with scientists from universities such as Stamford, Clue has managed to contribute ground-breaking research in women’s health.

Ava

This Swiss femtech company has designed and created wearable sensor technology in the form of an elegant bracelet. Backed by rigorous clinical trials, the sensors help women to predict, with 89% accuracy, days on which they are fertile. Results from its users further contribute to the body of knowledge surrounding female reproductive health. The company has also successfully raised €42m in investment.

Apricity

Apricity follows more of a traditional path in femtech, working with trusted networks of fertility clinics, doctors and specialists to provide tailor made plans and support, 7 days a week. Their care plans allow users to add virtual fertility counselling, reflexology and nutritional advise at any time through their app. The London-based company devises personalised fertility treatments by working closely with women and couples to help improve chances of conceiving. They do this using Artificial Intelligence and in partnership with leading global IVF experts.

Dame

With a mission to produce environmentally friendly products, increase accessibility and to ‘bring periods into the 21st century’, Dame is a sustainable period care brand changing the lives of women and cleaning up the period industry as they do so. This pioneering femtech company has successfully produced the world’s first reusable tampon and toxin-free, organic tampons. Their reusable pads also help contribute to a cleaner, plastic-free period experience. Dame offers worldwide online subscription packs and stocks products in stores around the UK, with the hope of supplying products that are better for your body and better for the world.
