Fractional Consultants and Business Consultants

The differences between Interim C-Suite Executives and Fractional Consultants

At TechNET CxO, we have recently introduced ‘Fractional Talent,’ including experienced fractional consultants, to provide a whole new level of executive search solutions. While the term ‘fractional consultant’ has gained popularity, are they different from interim C-Suite executives?

In general, a fractional consultant and an interim C-Suite executive are professionals who provide services to businesses on a temporary or project basis. However, there are key differences that make it entirely dependent on the business needs as to whom they need to bring on board.

Key differences between interim C-Suite executives and fractional consultants

It’s important to note that both of these approaches are entirely valid and can be highly valuable to a business. So, our aim is not to highlight which is ‘better’; it’s about identifying who works best for your business requirements. Our team can assist you in finding the right fit for both interim talent and fractional consultants – let’s determine who you need to hire!

Role requirements

The nature of the responsibilities each professional undertakes varies significantly. Fractional consultants are typically brought in to offer strategic, top-tier guidance and support at senior level. They may be active in domains such as executive leadership, management, marketing, finance, or other specialised areas. Their role frequently goes beyond task completion and often encompasses strategic planning and decision-making.

On the other hand, an interim C-Suite executive is engaged for well-defined tasks or projects. Their responsibilities may include executive search, talent acquisition, market analysis, or any executive search project with a predetermined timeline. Interim C-Suite executives are anticipated to focus on the assigned project within the stipulated timeframe. It’s not uncommon for interim professionals to continue working with the company after the project has come to an end.

How much time do these professionals commit to your business?

Interim executives can work on a full-time or part-time basis, depending on the project’s requirements. Their commitment to a specific project may last one month, six months or could be for maternity cover. Within the executive search field, an interim executive will often be working with the team 5 days a week, so they will be more involved in the day-to-day.

A fractional consultant brings a lot of flexibility to the table. They can easily fit into a fast-paced environment, whether working from a distance or on-site. Unlike an interim executive, who takes on projects one by one, a fractional consultant dedicates a set amount of time to your business. They might even juggle multiple clients, providing valuable insights and expertise during their designated work hours.

Long-term relationships

As mentioned, it’s pretty common for interim executives to stay put with a company. In some cases, they might even become full-time team members, however, there’s usually a set timeframe before they move on to their next contract. If there’s no chance for an extension, the interim executive’s involvement with the business ends once they’ve completed their work.

Fractional consultants, on the other hand, open the door to building long-lasting professional relationships. With a fractional consultant, that partnership could extend over many years in some cases. There might be times when they’re less hands-on, but they’re always there to provide strategic advice and help tackle any issues that pop up, making a big impact and difference where necessary.
